Trailblazers

In 1954, head coach of the Golden Bears football team, Dale Rose, along with then junior, Ralph Kuenning (‘55), conceived the idea of having a wrestling team. With increased enthusiasm for the sport on the part of the student body, wrestling became a varsity team under the leadership of Head Coach Ray Moyer and assistant coach Lee Williams in 1955. Because of the crowded conditions of the school, the matmen were forced to hold practices in the cold, cramped, field house. The Bears had impressive victories in the city-wide meet held at OSU, placing third overall. When they met tougher, more experienced opponents in the district meet at Worthington, however, Arlington succeeded in sending only Dick Hardy (’55), a powerful 103-pound senior, to the regional tournament at Findlay, where he placed third.

In 1957, James Bell (’58), Ricky Eckler (’59), and Bob Vickers (’57) became Upper Arlington’s first OHSAA State Qualifiers.

In 1958, John Agee (’58), Jake Baas (’60), and Ricky Eckler (’59) became Upper Arlington’s first ever District Champions. Coach Ray Moyer sent five Qualifiers to the OHSAA State tournament (held in Cleveland) that year, including UA’s three District Champs, Peter Cullman, and Michael Jones.

Ricky Eckler (’59) became UA’s first three-time OHSAA State Qualifier in 1959. Currently there are only eight others with this distinction, including: Jake Baas (’60), Scott Holman (’85), Rex Holman (’88), Joel Walker (’98), Jim Ondecko (’01), Kevin Drake (’09), Jesse Bowers (’20), and Andrew Myers (’24).

Tom Saunders (’64) is Upper Arlington’s first OHSAA State Wrestling Champion and is one of only three UAHS wrestlers having earned the title. Saunders capped a perfect 29-0 season in 1964 by defeating the 154-pound defending state champion, Walter Keith of Elyria 2-1.  Saunders was one of only seven wrestlers from the Central District (second overall) to win an individual state title in the first 31 years of the OHSAA State Wrestling Championships, during a time when there was only one division for wrestling.

Rex Holman (’88) is Upper Arlington’s only two-time OHSAA State Champion (’87, ’88), the only three-time OHSAA State Placer (fourth in ’86) and is also UA’s only three-time District Champion (’86, ’87, ’88). Holman was undefeated both his junior (36-0) and senior (34-0) years, and finished his career at UAHS with an astonishing 112-5 record, earning him the highest win percentage (0.957) in UAHS Wrestling history.

Joel Walker (’98), claims the 1997 OHSAA State Championship at 152-pounds., becoming the program’s fourth individual state champion. Walker finished his junior season with a record of 40-2 and returned to the state tournament, claiming third place, his senior year.

In 1984, UA sent four wrestlers (Scott Hamilton (fifth), Scott Holman (second), Chris Kolly (fourth)) to the OHSAA State Tournament, including Tim McClellan (’87), who became the program’s first freshman State Qualifier.

In 1987, Tim McClellan (’87) became Upper Arlington Wrestling’s first four-time OHSAA State Qualifier. Just three years later, Matt Stout (’90) became only the second four-time OHSAA State Qualifier for UAHS.

In 1990, Matt Stout (’90) became the first individual to claim four Sectional Championships during his UAHS wrestling career. In 2024, Andrew Myers (’24) became only the second four-time Sectional Champion in Golden Grappler history.
