Congratulations to UA wrestlers Vito DiBenedetto (10) and Jamie Lowrey (11) who advance to the Central District Tournament on Feb 26th. At the Sectional Tournament in Marysville this past weekend, Vito finished third in the 130 pound weight class and Jamie finished 4th in the 189 pound class. Overall, UA finished 6th of 13 teams despite forfeiting two weight classes due to injuries.

This weekend, the varsity is idle preparing for sectionals while the JV is in action at Westerville North and the Freshman are at Dublin Scioto.

Congrats to the UA matmen who defeated Thomas Worthington 36-33 last night. Only three seniors started for UA, but all three – Joe Mascari (125; 20-5), Patrick O’Neill (135; 5-3), and Michael Kilstrom (160; 12-4) were victorious. The team also benefited from wins by underclassmen Kenji Gerhardt (103; pin @ 1:20), Andrew Steedman (119; 11-4), Vito DiBenedetto (130; 7-3), Blake Reid (145; pin @ 3:39), and Jamie Lowrey (189; pin @1:12). Underclassmen Taylor Neely (140), Riley Bivens (152), and Danny Watson (171) rounded out the starting lineup while the Bears had to forfeit three weight classes due to injuries. Congratulations to all the seniors and the team on a hard fought win.
Catch UA in action this Saturday Feb 5 in the All-North Tournament hosted by Dublin Jerome. Wrestling begins at 10am. The reference point for being “All-North” must be moving southward, as the competing teams include: Dublin Jerome, Circleville, Johnstown Monroe, Lancaster, Whetstone, Linden McKinley, Grove City, Northland, Upper Arlington, Westerville Central, Westerville South, and Westland.

This Thursday Feb 3 is UA’s last home match and therefore the last time our seniors will wrestle at home. We will be recognizing seniors Keeley McCormick, Joe Mascari, Patrick O’Neill, Nick Padavana, Connor Pitman, Michael Kilstrom, and Ben Ross prior to our dual meet against Thomas Worthington. After the meet, join us for a post-meet celebration in the East Cafeteria (approx 7:30pm).

Licking Valley wast 1st with 200 points. UA finished 9th with 91 points despite forfeiting four weight classes due to injuries.
Congratulations to Kenji Gerhardt who took 1st place at 103 pounds beating Valenti of Hilliard Darby in the finals. Kenji’s win avenged an earlier season loss to Valenti. The sectional draws have been released, so those two might battle again in the Marysville sectional. A video replay of this match is here.
Other wrestlers who placed include:
Senior co-captain Connor Pitman was injured with a concussion in his semi-final match and wasn’t able to finish the tournament. Connor took 6h place. Andrew Steedman (119), Taylor Neely (140), Riley Bivens (152), and Danny Watson (160) also competed for UA. Starting wrestlers Michael Kilstrom, Skylar Sowry, and Cam Gardiner all sat out this tournament due to injuries.
Nice article in This Week on UA sophomore Vito DiBenedetto! And congrats to the team who defeated Westland last night 44-34, which featured captain Connor Pitman returning from injury for this home match.
UA is in action this weekend at Groveport High School. Round One wrestling begins at 9:30am. Finals could/should start at 5:30pm.
This tournament features a 12-man bracket of teams from Groveport Madison, Hilliard Darby, Logan, New Albany, Olentangy Orange, Troy, Upper Arlington, Westerville Central, Worthington Kilbourne, Nelsonville-York, Licking Valley, Tri-Valley, and Whitehall.
