The Upper Arlington Mat Cubs Wrestling Program is a youth athletic program designed to teach kids in the first through the sixth grades the basic fundamentals of the sport of wrestling. This year’s Program will be on Tuesday and Thursday nights beginning on November 29, 2011 and ending in early-to-mid February. Children in the 1st and 2nd grade will meet on Tuesday nights from 6:30-8:00 PM while children in grades 3rd through 6th will meet on Thursday nights from 6:30-8:00 PM. The cost of the Program is $110 (maximum $185 per family), which includes a T-Shirt, team photo poster and the participation fee in the Central Ohio Youth Wrestling League, with all proceeds from the Program going toward supporting the Upper Arlington Wrestling Program.
We strongly encourage you to enroll your son in the Mat Cubs Program for several reasons. First of all, the individual character of wrestling teaches personal responsibility like no other sport. The individual wrestler, and no one else is, is solely responsible for victory or defeat. This responsibility can be invaluable in developing a youngster’s character and self-esteem. In addition, wrestling builds strength and endurance as well as developing self-reliance and perseverance. The activity conditions the body for a variety of other sports by developing coordination, speed, accuracy, balance while keeping muscles trim and pliable. In that regard, competing in wrestling can help a young athlete improve physically in other sports, especially football. Finally, wrestling matches contestants according to weight enabling boys of all sizes to compete in their own weight class.
The Mat Cubs Director is David Tiggett, who enters his first year of directing the Mat Cubs after serving as the assistant director of the program the past two seasons. David will be assisted by the entire Upper Arlington High School coaching staff, including new Upper Arlington head coach and former Mat Cubs Director Matt Stout.
Overall, the Mat Cubs Staff is committed to helping your son learn the fundamentals of wrestling in an organized and enjoyable environment.
An informational and registration meeting for the Mat Cubs will be held on Wednesday, November 16th at 6:30 P.M. in the Upper Arlington High School Wrestling Room. The Mat Cubs Staff looks forward to seeing you then.
